After the Midterms
This week’s midterm elections had a split result. Democrats gained a majority in the House of Representatives, while Republicans increased their majority in the Senate. The Senate results were particularly noteworthy because of the Senate’s role in confirming judicial appointments. Now Senate Republicans can continue working with the Trump administration to fill the federal court system with excellent justices who interpret our laws according to the Constitution. This should significantly strengthen the outlook for pending and future cases involving free speech, religious liberty, and the lives of the unborn. As Christians, I believe we should be encouraged by these developments.
At the same time, elections are a reminder that no political order this side of eternity is permanent. Peace and justice are difficult to attain and nearly impossible to keep. But in this in-between time, as we await the promise of God’s kingdom, our biblical responsibility is to “seek the welfare of the city” (Jer. 29:7), and to pray fervently that God will use our leaders to fulfill government’s responsibility while we as Christians fulfill our responsibility to share the good news of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible.
Gracious Father, we earnestly ask that your Holy Spirit would be at work in our country. Grant our leaders insight and wisdom to make decisions that will promote our common good and achieve your sovereign purpose. Protect our country from harm, whether it be from natural disaster, terrorism, or internal division. And renew within each of us a courage to sacrifice our lives in service to others, in imitation of Jesus Christ. Amen.
