Consenting to Christmas?
This week, Dr. Eric Sprankle, an associate professor of clinical psychology and a sex therapist at the University of Minnesota, Mankato, took to Twitter to offer his own timely insights on the meaning of Christmas. He wrote: “The virgin birth story is about an all-knowing, all-powerful deity impregnating a human teen. There is no definition of consent that would include that scenario. Happy Holidays.”
These comments are nothing but blasphemous babble from someone who is entirely ignorant of the Bible. First, Luke 1 records Mary’s hymn of praise thanking God for choosing her to give birth to the Messiah (Luke 1:38). Furthermore, it is a mistake to say that a sovereign God needs “consent” from us for anything He chooses to do. He is God! And what God chose to do in sending his Son to earth was the ultimate display of his amazing grace, not an example of predation. A fireman pulling someone from a burning building is a hero, not a predator. I pray that Dr. Sprankle finds God’s grace now, before he meets Christ on Judgment Day.
God, we pray for those in our culture who are so ignorant of our faith and opposed to Christian belief. We ask that you would open their eyes to see the goodness and grace of Christ, shown to us in his willingness to come to earth and die on our behalf. Let us be faithful witnesses to this truth, always ready to give an answer for the hope we have, even in the face of such sneering opposition.
