This week the country celebrated a newly minted holiday—Cyber Monday. Gone are the days of meandering through aisles or waiting in long checkout lines at the department store. In just a few taps on a smartphone, your Christmas shopping is done. The package will be at your door in just a few days… Or will it?
Several major cities have reported that package theft is on the rise. In New York City alone, a report found that 90,000 packages are stolen each day. In a season meant to be about giving gifts, an army of anti-Santas quietly preys on internet shoppers, taking their prized gifts before they can be received. It’s hard to image anything more opposed to Christmas!
Well, perhaps these Grinch-like robbers unwittingly show us exactly why the world needs Christmas in the first place. We’re all a bunch of rotten Scrooges at heart. If technology could fix us, New Yorkers wouldn’t have 90,000 packages a day missing from their doorsteps. It’s a sin problem, not a technology problem. The good news is that God sent his only Son into the world to save us from our sins. Jesus was the gift we didn’t deserve and couldn’t buy. He was also the gift no one—not Pilate, not Judas, and not even Satan himself—could take away. He offered himself freely for us all, so that we could have eternal life in Him.
God, we ask that you would use the Christmas season to help us see that we are sinners desperately in need of a Savior. Remind us once again how amazing it is that the Son of God would humble himself, take on flesh, and become one of us in order to save us. Focus our hearts on the real treasure that thieves cannot steal or take away, which is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
