Putting Politics in its Proper Place on Thanksgiving
We are living in divided times in America, and it’s changing the way we interact with friends and family. Republicans and Democrats reportedly have fewer friendships than they used to. One study even suggested that families with divided partisan loyalties had shorter Thanksgiving meals together.
This is what happens when we go beyond regarding politics as important and instead make it ultimate. Every political quarrel gains outsized significance. Because there’s nothing beyond us which can unite us, we devolve into a claustrophobic frenzy where every political problem has only human solutions with human enemies blocking our way.
But the Gospel proclaims that God himself has broken into the human frame. Human problems need divine solutions. Only Christ can heal and unite us. So I want to echo what President Lincoln said in his Thanksgiving proclamation now 155 years ago, calling on all Americans to “fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.”
Lord, we ask on this Thanksgiving day that you would fill our hearts with a profound gratitude. It is in you that we find our existence and our redemption through Jesus Christ. By the grace and mercy shown to us in Christ, help us show hospitality and love to family members, friends, and neighbors. Empower us as your ambassadors to bring reconciliation to our sphere of influence, for your glory.
