The Story of John Allen Chau
Details have slowly been emerging about 26-year-old John Allen Chau, an American missionary who was killed two weeks ago while trying to establish contact with the inhabitants of North Sentinel Island. Chau had been training for years, hoping to share Christ with the Sentinelese.
Some observers, such as Survive International, have questioned Chau’s decision because outsiders like him could potentially spread diseases to which isolated people have no immunities. Of course this is a legitimate concern. But John Allen Chau risked his life trying to reach the Sentinelese because he knew they already had an eternally deadly disease called “sin.” The Sentinelese may be the most isolated people group in the world, and we may know hardly anything about their culture. But we do know this: like all of us, they are sinners in need of a Savior.
This is not the story of a stranger coming to contaminate a pure and undisturbed way of life. This is the story of a fellow sinner who gave his life trying to deliver the Sentinelese the only cure for humanity’s sin disease—the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
God, we pray for the people of North Sentinel Island. We pray that you would use John’s life and example to spur on further efforts to reach the Sentinelese with the Gospel. Please protect the Sentinelese from disease or harm amidst these efforts, so that they can hear and respond to your message. We also pray that you would embolden us to live lives completely committed to fulfilling the Great Commission wherever you lead us.
